Susan Sistrunk- from art and illustration!
Though she loved creating art and illustrations, Susan had remained self-taught, and had turned her academic focus on music. Upon entering Temple College at the age of eighteen, Susan returned to the visual arts and discoverd a love of Art History. As a result, throughout her art career, monoliths and megalithic structures would feature greatly in her works, through a variety of media.

At what age did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I was a little girl when a friend of my parents gave me a set of Grumbacher oil pastels. They were so different from crayons. I fell in love with drawing at that time.
What is the earliest artwork you did that you can remember?
I remember drawing Cinderella using a fairy tale book my mother gave me as inspiration. The illustrations in the book were captivating to me and I remember wanting to be able to draw something that beautiful.
Which classical or contemporary artists have inspired you?
Edward Hopper’s “Night Hawks” was introduced to me as a child and I fell in love with his use of color and edges. The dutch have always been a huge inspiration to me. In particular, Johannes Vermeer’s portraits of people in the midst of everyday activities.
How would you describe your artistic style?
The style of my work varies greatly at times, depending on the subject. I have been exploring new textural techniques lately which lend themselves to structural subjects. When commissioned by a private collector however, I tend to paint and draw in a much more traditional sense, according to the wishes of my customer.
When did you first sell an artwork? How did you feel?
My first sale was 22 years ago when I was 18 years old. It was so incredible to sell something I made and to see the happiness on the face of my customer.
What's your workstyle? Do you work on one piece at a time or work simultaneously on multiple pieces?
I typically work on several pieces at a time. Usually between 4-6 works are being developed at the same time.
How do you get the inspiration for a new piece?
Inspiration comes from many directions. Usually from ancient structures or civilizations.
Tell us a bit about your personal life ...
I lived in California until the age of 16. My parents and I moved to Texas during my junior year of high school. I became an art teacher at the age of 27 after completing my B.F.A in Studio Art from The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. I currently live in Waco with my son Dallas and spend most of my time making art and researching art history.
