 mixed media with Origami

Michelle Renee Garrison  began to work in a variety of mediums, one of which was Origami, a skill she learned from a Japanese childhood friend.

Michelle Renee Garrison

was born on Valentine’s Day, and grew up in Worthington, Ohio. Her interest in art began at an early age while attending youth classes at CCAD. As a student at Thomas Worthington High School, she began to exhibit her paintings competitively at both local and state levels.

At what age did you know you wanted to be an artist?

I realized I was an artist when people started asking me to paint something for them to have for themselves or give to some as a gift. Quite frankly though I can not really remember how old I was when that first happened, probably in my 20’s.

What is the earliest artwork you did that you can remember?

I remember making a robot in 2nd grade art class out of a shoe box wrapped in foil with pipe cleaners. I took pride in the planning and construction of that assignment for some reason. I guess that was when I realized my love of art or obsession.

Which classical or contemporary artists have inspired you?

I have always had an admiration for Gustav Klimt his works are emotionally engaging with a calm elegance. Of course most notably his work “The Kiss”.

How would you describe your artistic style?

My artistic style is essentially Mixed Media often incorporating Origami.

When did you first sell an artwork? How did you feel?

I had minimal sales before my first gallery sale over a decade ago but when I sold a piece through that gallery I felt humbled and elated at the same time.

What's your workstyle? Do you work on one piece at a time or work simultaneously on multiple pieces?

My workstyle happens in stages depending on whether I am creating a piece with Origami or just with color. For example if I am developing one of my “tree paintings” I choose which Origami paper I need and fold the desired objects first then incorporate them into the process, preferably working on several at the same time.

How do you get the inspiration for a new piece?

I get inspired to create new pieces for other people to have, colors and new projects inspire me.

Tell us a bit about your personal life ...

I love traveling and exploring places that I have never been. I find myself enthralled with the ways of life of other cultures, I also have a love for wine and elaborate foods.
